This niche cleaning business came about as a result of window cleaning on the Gold Coast for the last 20 years. With the huge increase of both private and commercial solar panel installations, we saw a need for the maintenance, especially the cleaning of these solar panels. Our experience with window cleaning in similar situations has given us various methods to clean panels on roofs and in difficult to get at locations.
Why clean your solar panels
Solar panel cleaning is a relatively new service on the Gold Coast that has come about as a result of the huge demand for solar power. Solar panels are at the mercy of the elements and because they lay relatively flat they attract dust, pollen, tree leaves and debris, bird and bat droppings and if living near the coast salt is a big problem. Keeping the panels clean by washing them ensures they utilise sunlight most effectively.
What are the benefits of cleaning
Solar panel cleaning has two main benefits, protecting your investment and increasing the efficiency of panels which in turn saves you money. Dirty solar panels decrease the amount of sunlight that reaches the photovoltaic cells which in turn reduces the output. Some manufacturers require regular cleaning to maintain the warranty on the panels.
How do we clean the panels
Traditional window cleaning method, using a soft applicator and a small amount of detergent gently agitate solar panels then squeegee dry. This method can be used providing the operator can work from a safe position. Panels are often mounted on sloping roofs making it difficult to work especially using water increasing the risk of slipping.
Purified water is another method we use to wash and clean the panels. The water is purified through a 4 stage reverse osmosis system that is mounted on the service vehicle, no chemicals are used and this has many benefits. If you use water tanks to gather rain water for drinking, household or garden usage there is no risk of chemicals getting into the water tanks. There is no risk of damage to waterproof seals on the panels and no water spotting or chemical residue remains when the panels dry.
Where possible we clean the panels from the ground using telescopic water fed poles that have soft nonabrasive brushes and this allows the technician to operate with the highest level of safety from the ground without the need for ladders or standing on the roof.
